john kerry remained in the region. we get more tonight from nbc's chief foreign affairs correspondent, andrea mitchell. >> reporter: john kerry, with jordan's king abdullah at his side, stayed behind, wasting no time trying to deliver on the president's promise of a fresh start for middle east diplomacy. shuttling from the king to an afternoon meeting in amman with palestinian president mahmoud abbas, then a quick trip to jerusalem for dinner with israel's prime minister benjamin netanyahu. before returning to amman. kerry is also dealing with an even more urgent crisis for both israel and jordan. the war next door in syria. u.s. and israeli intelligence say the assad regime is poised to use chemical weapons. >> once you let that situation spin out of control, it's very hard to -- to stop, and can have enormous spillover effects across the region. >> reporter: the cia is already training selected rebel groups to guard against a takeover by more radical elements once assad falls. the regime's weakness was demonstrated again thursday, by a suicide bombing at a damascus mosque. killing a

? >>> overseas secretary of state john kerry delivered a blunt message to the government of iraq today. it was all about what's happening with syria and iran. nbc's chief foreign affairs correspondent andrea mitchell is with the secretary in baghdad. >> reporter: john kerry is the first secretary of state to come to iraq since hillary clinton in 2009. it's his first visit since he came as a senator at the height of the civil war in 2006. arriving today in secrecy, in the week when iraq saw some of its worst terrorist attacks in years to mark the tenth anniversary of the war. but kerry did not come primarily to discuss iraq. despite the smiles for the cameras, the secretary of state confronted iraq's prime minister maliki, accusing him of colluding with iran to prop up the assad regime by permitting almost daily weapons shipments from iran to syria through iraq's airspace. >> we had a very spirited discussion on the subject of the overflights. i made it very clear to the prime minister that the overflights from iran are in fact helping to sustain president assad. and his regime. >> repo

and his wife were shot while driving through the east bay. >>> and secretary of state john kerry makes a stop in iraq. what he says the country's next step should be. >> announcer: nbc bay area news begins with breaking news. >>> good evening. i'm diane dwyer. >> and i'm terry mcsweeney. an active search is underway in half moon bay for a man last seen at the beach. the coast guard says the 22-year-old man was playing football at roosevelt beach with friends when he disappeared. he went into the water after the football and they haven't seen him since. his shirt and shoes there on the wae beach. no trace of the man. the coast guard has called in its helicopter. we'll keep you posted on the search for that 22-year-old man off of half moon bay. >>> in hayward, this afternoon, a family driving on a busy street ended up in the wrong place at the wrong time when shots were fired. the father in the car was hit and drove himself to the hospital. the shooting happened just a few hours ago at 2:40 this afternoon on tenson road. nbc bay area's monte francis is at the scene with more for us. hell
